About Budapest Metro
Budapest Metro (Budapesti metro) began operations in the year 1896. The rapid transit system servies the city of Budapest, Hungary. It operates 4 lines connecting to 52 stations. One of the oldest underground railway in the world, the metro is operated by the Centre for Budapest Transport. It operates from 4.30am to 11.30pm.
The Budapest Metro lines consist of Yellow (Vörösmarty tér – Mexikói út), Red (Déli pályaudvar – Örs vezér tere), Blue (Déli pályaudvar – Örs vezér tere) and Green (Kelenföld vasútállomás – Keleti pályaudvar). As for fares, commuters have Single ticket, Budapest 24-hour travelcard, 72-hour travelcard, Weekly Pass and Monthly Pass. There are also annual passes and special fares for students and senior citizens that offer discounted fares.
Tickets can be purchased through vending machines or at manned stations. For more information or queries on tickets, payment, refund, parking, lost and found items, or others, reach the Budapest Metro customer service.
I am a tourist. I paid my ticket two ways, I was fined 8000 ft. It says my ticket is not validated. I did not notice validation machine. I simply had no idea. It is absolutely not fair to be fined cause I did pay for my ticket. If I was traveling without tickets, I understand. There is error in the system. In the ticket it is mentioned the date. Change the system, make it more tourist friendly. Traveled the whole world. No metro station ticketing system is like Budapest.
I and my partner have just been fined by a Metro ticket inspector on the Budapest metro system. We bought the tickets and receipt but couldn’t find a validation machine, as we had a receipt I thought this would be ok, but no. We got stopped as we left the station and even though we showed receipts etc we were fined 8000 florins each. This is a total racket and a disgrace , a cheap way to tax tourists coming to Budapest. The inspector 5127 could have given advice knowing we had paid for our ticket. I now see this is a common complaint made by tourists. The metro seems to be running a mafia type taxing system which is very poor for a modern city and gives Budapest a bad name
