About Big Ben
Big Ben is a giant bell located in the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster in London. The iconic landmark is visited by locals and foreigners alike throughout the year. It is a nickname of the Great Bell and first chimed in 1858. Located in the north end, in Elizabeth Tower, Big Ben was made with copper and tin. It weighs 13 tons and is 7 feet and 6 inch tall. The hammer that strikes the bell weighs more than 450 pounds. It took some 34 years to complete the masterpiece. The bell was designed by Edmund Beckett Denison and Edward Dent.

The bell was apparently meant to be called Royal Victoria. If you dint know, there are four smaller bells below Big Ben that ring on the ‘quarter’ hours. Each clock dial is lighted by 28 bulbs, each with a lifetime of 60,000 hours. There are regular guided tours that will take you close to the tower and the giant bell. If you are planning a solo trip, you will need to alight at the Westminster Tube Station, St James’s Park tube Station or Charing Cross Railway Station. For more information or queries on timings, tickets, tours, parking, transportation, or others, reach the Big Ben customer service.
