The North Carolina QuickPass is an all-electronic toll collection program created by the North Carolina Turnpike Authority. Designed to be used on the Triangle Expressway, the Monroe Expressway, and the I-77 Express Lanes, drivers can now pay for tolls without waiting in long queues.
Through the introduction of pre-paid transponders, the North Carolina QuickPass program allows for the most cost effective and easiest way to pay for tolls, across 19 different states. These include North Carolina, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Alternatively, drivers who do not wish to pay via pre-paid transponders can utilise the post-paid “Bill By Mail” programme, where a statement or invoice will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle.
What are the Requirements For New Pass?
When registering for North Carolina QuickPass, you will have two primary types of accounts that you can choose from โ personal accounts and business accounts. Users of both types of accounts can save up to 35 per cent on North Carolina tolls. However, the main difference that lies between them is that personal accounts can only register up to ten vehicles per account with one transponder per vehicle, while business accounts can register an unlimited number of vehicles with one transponder allocated to each vehicle.
Additionally, both of the above-mentioned accounts must maintain a $20 minimum prepaid balance and have HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) compatibility. An HOV vehicle means that three or more people are travelling inside the vehicle. It should be known that the HOV facility can only be used in the I-77 Express Lanes in North Carolina, and users must set the HOV status via the NC Quick Pass App 15 minutes before travel. Do remember that if you have registered as an HOV-only account, then you cannot use your account elsewhere to pay tolls and will only be restricted to one vehicle per account.
Apart from that, users can opt for first responder and transit accounts as well. All first responders can travel for free on North Carolina toll roads while responding to emergencies for law enforcement, medical, fire, and rescue services. If you want to apply for a first responder account, you have to fill out the form here and submit it online. Alternatively, transit accounts can enjoy free travel along the I-77 Express Lanes. To sign up for a transit account, you need to fill out the form here and then submit it online as well. Lastly, when applying for either of the aforementioned accounts, you will need the following set of information: your vehicle and license plate registration numbers, and your payment information.
