Overview of Frequent Flyer Program
The frequent flyer program at Southwest Airlines is called Rapid Rewards. It allows you to earn points when you fly with Southwest or its partner airlines, as well as through various other methods such as booking hotels, renting cars, shopping with partner merchants, and using Southwest Airlinesโ credit cards.
The program operates on a points-based system rather than a traditional mileage system. The number of points you earn is based on the fare type and the price of your ticket. One of the standout features of the Rapid Rewards is the Companion Pass. If you earn 125,000 qualifying points or take 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year, you can designate a companion to fly with you for free (excluding taxes and fees) on both paid and award tickets for the remainder of the year in which you earn the Companion Pass and the following year.
Rapid Rewards has a tiered system that includes A-list and A-list Preferred. A-list status is earned after flying 25 one-way qualifying flights or earning 35,000 tier qualifying points in a calendar year. A-list Preferred status is earned after flying 50 one-way qualifying flights or earning 70,000 tier qualifying points in a calendar year. These elite statuses offer benefits such as priority boarding, priority check-in, and bonus points.
With Rapid Rewards, there are no blackout dates when redeeming points for flights. As long as there are seats available on a flight, you can use your points to book it. The Rapid Rewards points do not expire as long as you have earning or redemption activity on your account at least once every 24 months.
Southwest Airlines is known for its customer-friendly policies, and one of those is that there are no change fees for modifying or canceling your flight. This applies to both paid and award tickets.
