Coursera, based in Silicon Valley, debuted as an online education forum in 2012. Coursera’s wide-open online courses are available to students all over the world. Coursera has collaborations with universities such as Duke University, Columbia University, and Carnegie Mellon University. Working professionals can obtain certificates, accreditations, and expertise from industry partners like Cisco and IBM.

Working professionals can also advance their careers by taking advantage of training opportunities provided by corporate partners including L’Oreal, and PayPal. Nearly 40 percent of learners complete the paid courses in which they register. Coursera for Business was introduced in 2016. Coursera began collaborating with businesses seeking an online system to train their staff through this feature. Coursera is used by over 2,300 companies and is offered by at least 50 companies.

Coursera, which was founded by the educators of Stanford University Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng, had no revenue model or provided any degrees to users in its early days. Memberships, authenticated certificates, and graduate programs are now used to raise income in the existing model. In March 2021, the company had its Initial public offering (IPO). Coursera is ideal for employees, who want to learn new skills or earn a degree but require flexibility and affordability. Certificates and specializations allow for both virtual and offline education. This is beneficial for learners with a hectic schedule such as students who want to save money on their education, single parents, and people who are employed full-time.

How the Coursera Model Works

Coursera training is composed of pre-recorded learning materials that you can watch on a weekly or as need basis. There are also student discussion boards, homework or assignments, and online quizzes and exams. Several Coursera pieces of training are a component of Coursera Specializations. These Specializations are made up of a series of courses, the last of which is a Capstone project for some Specializations. Learners will receive a Specialization certificate if they earn a certificate for each course in the Specialization. The vast majority of courses include some aspect of “free” โ€” most videos are free to view, but there are charges to access the graded assignments and receive a certificate after the completion of the course. When you search for free courses on Coursera’s website, you’ll notice a note at the top of the results explaining that lessons and non-graded content are free to be used.

What to Know Before Canceling Your Subscription

Simply canceling your Specialization membership will not result in a refund of previous payments, but will halt all further payments. Users will no longer have access to paid course materials such as graded assignments if they cancel. Any certificates you earned while subscribed will be kept by you. Work completed in unfinished courses will be reapplied if you re-register or make a payment for the Specialization.

When you subscribe to a Specialization, your payments will be terminated invariably once you have finished all of the courses within the specialization. Since all Specialization subscriptions start with cost-free trials, you cannot receive a refund for a fee paid after the free trial ends. Subscriptions do not offer partial refunds, so you must cancel before the forthcoming billing date.
