About Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle is the among one of the most popular castles in the world. It is located in Windsor, Berkshire, UK, and serves as the royal residence of Queen Elizabeth II. The Windsor Castle was built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror. Since then it has served as the home of several British kings and queens (about 40 monarchs). The castle has undergone umpteen renovations for several years. It even was partially damaged during a big fire in 1992.
Spread across 13 acres, the Windsor Castle contains about 1,000 rooms. The architecture has a Georgian and Victorian design with Gothic features. For some facts, Windsor Castle is home to St George’s Chapel, which is home of the Order of the Garter. St George’s Hall in fact is the biggest room in the castle. At the Upper Ward in the castle, you will find Royal and State Apartments. Here you will find art of by renowned artists such as Rembrandt, Michelangelo and Van Dyck.
The castle is surrounded by beautiful parkland. It further has an impressive 300 fireplaces and 450 clocks. It also houses a royal librarian with a collection of 300,000 books and prints. If you are visiting here, you can request a free Precinct Tour with one of the Castle’s wardens. The castle is open for pubic from 9.30am to 4pm. Every Saturday there is an exciting family programme that is open to all. There are special tours of the royal dining, state apartments, among others.
