About Washington Monument
One of the most recognized monuments in the world is the 555-foot obelisk Washington monument situated on the National Mall in Washington, District of Columbia. Designed by architects Robert Mills and Thomas Lincoln Casey Sr, it commemorates the memory of the first president of the United States of America, George Washington. The towering shape of the Washington monument was chosen to symbolise the strength of the country and of the first president.
Though currently closed till the spring of 2019 for renovation, the Washington monument is a must see for visitors, not just to Washington DC but to the United States. The National Mall is a 2-mile stretch between the US Capitol building and the Lincoln Memorial. Most of the cityโs monuments are situated here.
The Washington Monument is flanked by the Capitol building, RFK stadium and the Anacostia River on the east, the White House and the National Cathedral to the north, The Lincoln Memorial, WWII Memorial, Martin Luther King Memorial and the Potomac River to the west and The Thomas Jefferson Memorial, The Pentagon and the Ronald Reagan Washington National airport to the south, making it an integral part of the Washington DC tour.
Inside the lobby on the ground floor is situated the statue of George Washington. Visitors can go up the elevator to the top floor to the observation deck at the tip of the obelisk from where visitors can view the panorama for miles around. The monument is disabled friendly. However, visitors allowed to go into the monument is limited and it is advisable to plan the trip in advance to avoid disappointment.
The monument generally is open through the year from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. The only days the monument is closed are the 4th of July and the 25th of December every year. You can visit the website for special events, schedule and other important updates.
The area around the Washington Memorial is abuzz with activity. Families spread out blankets and make a picnic of the visit. The area is a haunt for food trucks and the area becomes a gourmetโs paradise with food that great on the palate but easy on the pocket.
