About Upwork
Upwork is a freelance and crowdsourcing platform that connects employers with independent contractors. Formerly known as Elance-oDesk, the company boasts of millions of jobs posted each year. Elance-oDesk came into existence with the merger of two entities Elance and oDesk. The former was founded by entrepreneurs Beerud Sheth and Srini Anumolu in 1998. What started in a two-bedroom apartment in Jersey, Elance moved to Sunnyvale in 1999 with 22 employees. oDesk was founded by friends Stratis Karamanlakis and Odysseas Tsatalos in 2003. It started as a staffing firm but eventually transitioned into a marketplace allowing users to hire and collaborate with workers. The merger of the companies took place in 2013, and the result was Elance-oDesk. The company was later rebranded as Upwork in 2015. Upwork is currently headquartered in Santa Clara, California. The company also operates offices in San Francisco and Chicago. Upwork now caters to more than 18 million freelancers. The platform posts jobs valued at $1 bn annually, which makes it one the largest marketplaces. New users can start responding to job posts after creating an account on the platform. A user ID and password can be generated after email verification. The clients on the website can post their jobs along with the description and the price range they are willing to pay the freelancer. Clients can also invite specific freelancers to apply for the listed job. Further, clients can reach out to freelancers that they are interested in via chat or private messaging. You have hourly contracts and fixed-priced contracts. The latter is based on milestones. Note that the availability of payment methods varies by country.
