About Tower of London
Tower of London is a medieval castle located in central London. Also known as Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress, the Tower of London is today a popular tourist attraction, welcoming close to 2.8mn visitors each year. Spread across 12 acres and located on the north bank of the River Thames, the tower was constructed by William the Conqueror in 1066. It is designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

Though the Tower was constructed for the sole reason of serving as a royal palace, it was later turned into a prison, from 1100AD to up to the 19th century. And during the second world war, it was used as a prisoner war camp. Some 22 executions have taken place inside the Tower of London.

Today, the Tower is still officially a royal residence of the Queen. It even houses the crown jewels which are estimated to be over £20 billion. Visitors can also find on display an impressive collection of royal armour including those worn by Henry VIII.

The Tower of London also has been an inspiration for many fable stories, including the famous ‘Princes in the Tower’. It is apparently based on the imprisonment of Edward V and Richard by their uncle who became Richard III.

The Tower is also famous for the flock of ravens that resides here and is cared for by the Yeoman Warder Ravenmaster. They say the tower and monarchy will fall if the six ravens ever leave the fortress.

The Tower of London is open all days, from 9am to 5.30pm. On Sunday and Monday, the gates open only at 10am. There are adult and child tickets that can be purchased at the entrance or online on the website. Members of the Historical Royal Palaces membership can enter for free. HRP members also enjoy discounts on shops, cafes and restaurants.

Visitors can dine at New Armouries Cafe, Apostrophe, Ravens Cafe or go shopping for gifts and souvenirs. Dedicated facilities and wheelchair hire are available for disabled visitors. For more information or queries on timings, tickets, refund, cancellation, parking, transportation, or others, reach the Tower of London customer support.
