About Tongariro National Park
Tongariro National Park is a World Heritage site and one of the oldest parks in New Zealand. Established in the year 1887, the park is spread across 79,596 hectares and is located in the central North Island. Within the park found are the volcanic mountains Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro. Those who enjoy hiking, visit the park for the famous and much-loved Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
Tongariro National Park is one of three World Heritage sites in New Zealand. You can reach any of the tour operators within the park to receive help with an itinerary for sight seeing or for the wide array of activities. Things you can do include guided hiking, skiing and snowboarding, Wanganui river canoe trips, river rafting, mountain biking and volcanic adventures.
There is a Visitor Centre located at Whakapapa Village where you can get information on the services you can find within the park. It is open from 8am to 5pm. There are a number of dining areas and places of accommodation around the Tongariro National Park.
