About Stonehenge
Stonehenge is a popular tourist attraction in Salisburg, England. It is a large stone monument that is said to have evolved over a period of 10,000 years. The present structure is believed to have been formed 5,000 years ago. Some of the stones in the spot weigh over 25 tons and are up to 30 feet tall. The bigger stones are known as sarsens, while the smaller stones are called bluestones. The bluestones weigh up to 4 tons.
The famous megalithic monument is formed of 83 stones in total. Over the years, excavators have discovered medieval artifacts, Roman pottery, stone, metal items and coins. The stones are situated in Wiltshire, 3kms of Amesbury. As to why the monument was built, there are several theories. Among them is that it was a site of religious worship and ritual, possibly also a burial site. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is maintained by English Heritage.
More than 800,000 visitors come to Stonehenge each year. As for tickets, you can purchase them at the entrance or online using major credit cards. The monument is open for visitors from 9am to 7pm. Ticket rates vary for adults and children. English Heritage members and members of the National Trust in England can enter for free. The membership is open for all. By joining the English Heritage membership, you get unlimited access to over 400 historic places for a whole year.
Visitors have parking facility on the site. There is also a 110-seater cafe for a quick bite or meal. You can further shop for gifts and souvenirs on the website or at the outlet at the site.
