About General Directorate of Passports
All matters concerning passport and visas in the State of Qatar is handled by the Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Passports. Established in the fifties, the agency was originally operating as the Passports Division- Dairathul Jawazath. However, it was only after 1989, a restructuring of the government and the various departments gave birth to the current Directorate. For an overview on the functions, the General Directorate of Passports is responsible for implementing the rules, regulations and decisions for entry, exist and sponsorship of visitors and citizens. It also decides on the permanent residency status of applicants. Besides providing administrative and technical supervision, the agency also has the legal capabilities to make changes to the legislation in the division.

Departments within the General Directorate of Passports include the Nationality and Travel Documents Department, Expatriates Affairs Department, Borders Passports Department, Unified Services Department and Airport Passports Department. The National and Travel Documents Dept is responsible for ID cards and passports of Qatari nationals. It has centers in Al Ruwais, Al Khor, Al Wakrah, Al Shahaniya and Mesaimeer. The Border Passports Department organizes and monitors the entry and exit of visitors to and from the country. It also is responsible for issuing on arrival and other visas, from and to the country. Another important division within the Directorate is the Expatriates Affairs Dept. The Expatriates Affairs Dept is responsible for issuing all types of entry visas. It also issues, renews and cancels residence permits in accordance with the law when needed.

Qatar tourist visas can be obtained on arrival by visitors from a number of countries. The list includes US, UK, Australia, South Korea, France, Germany, Ireland, Singapore, Malaysia, Portugal, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.
