About Park Guell
Designed by renowned Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, Park Guell is an urban civic park, built in the early 19th century in Barcelona, Spain. Named after Eusebi Guell, the mastermind behind the construction of famous architectural landmarks of Barcelona, the park is Antoni Gaudi’s finest masterpiece amongst his works.
Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, the original theme of the park was that of an avant-garde real estate for 60 homes, with high-end amenities for comfort and convenience of the inhabitants. The project failed to attract the right investors, and the work came to a sudden-halt, after the completion of the guardian’s house and the model house, and later opened as a public park in 1926.
The park’s design theme is nature-inspired on 17-hectares, and divides into two zones, the monumental, and the free zone. In the monumental zone, visitors can explore all the well-known monuments of the park, and the free zone is all about the garden, pathways & outdoor spaces, and covers 92.1% of the entire park.
Everything in Park Guell has fluidity in contour, and there are no straight lines at all. Park Guell was the official residence of architect Antoni Gaudi, and is now a heritage museum of his works. The top Eight things to see at Park Guell are, the Calvary (a small mountain), Salamander (mosaic tile bench), Austria gardens (plant nursery), Sala Hipostila (86 Hypostyle room), Laundry room portico (Catalan architecture), Passeig de las palmeras (stone passageway), the Terrace (monumental zone), and the Gaudi Museum (House of Gaudi).
