About Palais Garnier
Palais Garnier is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. It was built on the orders of Napoleon III in 1861. An architectural masterpiece, the Palais Garnier was formally opened in the year 1875 and has a style that is considered Beaux-Arts. Visitors to the opera house will be marveled at the exterior ornamentation and the Neo-Baroque decorative elements.
At a height of 184 feet and length of 508 feet, the opera house has a seating capacity of 1,979. The architectural front of the building was created by 14 painters, mosaicists and 73 sculptors. You will find here busts of popular composers such as Mozart, Rossini, Daniel Auber, Beethoven, Meyerbeer, Spontini and Philippe Quinault. There is a huge chandelier that hangs from the ceiling inside and weighs 8 tons (made of bronze and crystal).
Originally named Salle des Capucines, the building was home to Paris Opera until 1989. The opera house was made famous to the world in the novel The Phantom of the Opera in 1911. There is a museum gallery in the building that houses paintings, drawings, and photographs spanning three centuries. The Palais Garnier is opened every day from 10am to 5pm.
