Norwegian Police Service is the central law enforcement agency in Norway. Locally called the Politi- og lensmannsetaten, the civilian police agency employs more than 16,000 across the country. The agency, with 66+ stations and 300+ Sheriff’s offices, is responsible to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. Organisational structure include a central National Police Directorate, twelve police districts and seven specialist agencies. Specialist agencies include the important National Criminal Investigation Service, National Police Immigration Service, National Mobile Police Service, Norwegian Police University College, among others.

The Directorate is headed by the National Police Commissioner. You can apply for passport, report lost passport, report theft or vandalism, or apply for police certificate. Applying for police certificate is quicker on the website. The police certificate of conduct will be sent to your email. You can also receive it by regular mail. Note that the processing currently takes two weeks. You can check the status of your application online any time. If you are a foreigner and plan to stay in Norway for more than three months, you are required to apply for a residence permit or asylum. You can register your application on the application portal and apply for residence permit to work and study.
