About National Portrait Gallery
National Portrait Gallery (NPG) is a popular art gallery in London that was established in the year 1856. Located at St Martin’s Place, NPG is said to have been the first portrait gallery in the world. Visited by more than 2.5 million visitors each year, the gallery is home to some 200,000 portraits.
The earliest portrait in the collection is that of King Henry VII, drawn around 1505. The biggest portrait is that of General Officers of World War I by John Singer Sargent, which is nearly 5.3 metres wide. The smallest portrait is that of Henrietta Anne, the Duchess of Orleans.
At the gallery, you can find portraits from the 16th century to the present day. They are also a variety of forms that include drawings, miniatures, paintings, photographs, prints and sculptures. You can search the collections by sitter or artist surname on the website.
You can visit the website to know the ongoing exhibitions or upcoming art events scheduled at the NPG. You can register to be a member or patron of the gallery. Benefits include free entry to exhibitions, discounts at the gallery shops and restaurant, preview tours, among others.
The admission to the gallery is free. As for timings, you will need to visit the place between 10am to 6pm. On Thursday and Friday, the gallery is open up till 9pm. Visitors can dine or relax at the Portrait Restaurant, Portrait Cafe or go shopping at the book and gift shops.
