About Mount Kinabalu
Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in Malaysia, located on the island of Borneo. It lies within Kinabalu National Park and has an elevation of 13,435 feet. Said to have formed 10 million years ago, the mountain had the first ascent in 1851. The mountain is locally popular as Aki Nabalu. The local government only allows 135 climbers each day. Visitors must be accompanied by professional guides. Climbing permits and insurance can be obtained at Mount Kinabalu Climb Booking Centre. Best time to visit Mount Kinabalu is from March to August. Mesilau Trail and Kinabalu Summit Trail are the popular trails taken. The climb apparently takes a minimum of two days.
For nature enthusiasts, the Kinabalu National Park is a treasure trove. It was established in 1964 and covers an area of 291 square miles. It boasts of around 6,000 species of plants, 100 species of mammals, and 326 species of birds. In 2000, the park was designated UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
Mount Kinabalu offers two climb packages for visitors – via ferrata climb package and non-ferrata climb package. A climbing permit issued from Sabah Park Authority is mandatory.
