About Louvre Museum
Louvre is said to be the biggest museum in the world. It was a originally a fortress built in 1190. The Musee du Louvre was turned from a fortress into a palace in the 16th century. It was latest renamed as Musee Napoleon under Napoleon’s reign. One of the most famous pieces of art in the museum is that of Mona Lisa. Currently, there are over 7,500 paintings. The galleries, spread across 15 acres, is divided into eight departments – Near Eastern Antiquities, Egyptian Antiquities, Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, Islamic Art, Sculptures, Decorative Arts, Paintings, and Prints and Drawings.
The Louvre Museum, located within the Louvre Palace, each day welcomes over 15,000 visitors. It is said to house over 380,000 pieces in total collections. Officially opened in 1793, the museum is open every day except Tuesday, from 9am to 6pm. If you are visiting there as a tourist, you will find an information map at the entrance in thirteen languages. There is also audio guide for smartphones, besides personal guided tours. Group visits must be booked in advance.
You can enter the museum through Pyramid, Galerie du Carrousel, Passage Richelieu and Porte des Lions entrances. Visitors under the age of 18 can enter the museum for free with valid ID proof. Teachers of art, disabled visitors as well as those receiving benefits can enter freely. Tickets generally cost €15 and can be paid by cash or card.
