About Long Island Power Authority
The Long Island Power Authority is a municipal electric provider serving consumers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. Established in the year 1985, the government owned agency is commonly referred as LIPA and operates on a public-private partnership business model. Currently it is the third largest municipal electric distribution system in the US. In 2016, it posted revenue of $3.5 billion. Currently, it serves more than 1.1 million customers through the 177 sub stations and 32 power plants.

LIPA’s mission remains to “enable clean, reliable, and affordable electric service”. The company’s partnership with PSEG Long Island has brought new technology to better manage outages, have modern bill payment options and lower customer complaint rates. It’s outage map provides ability to identity and manage outages in real-time. Customers get outage alerts by text, email or phone. Further, the deployment of smart meters help view and better manage energy use. Customers get new pricing options, more accurate bills, faster outage detection and better grid management.

Customers can stay up to date on LIPA’s tariff for electric service on the website. Tariffs are regularly reviewed by the Public Service Commission. LIPA sells power to customers at its actual cost. It also runs low-income programs to help income-eligible families reduce utility costs. The company has been investing into Long Island’s electric grid for more energy-efficient solutions. Visit LIPA’s service provider’s website to report outage, check account balance, see bill or make payments. Interested in a career with LIPA in the New York City metropolitan area?
