About Kariye Museum
Chora Church, also known as the Kariye Museum, is an ancient Byzantine church built during the 4th century. Chora means “outside of the city” in Greek. Located in the Edirnekapi district, the museum was first named “The Church of the Holy Savior Outside the Walls”. The western walls of the building was constructed by Emperor Theodosius. After the Ottoman conquest in 1453, the church was converted to a mosque. Though much of the extravagant interiors were damaged during the many conquests, still the museum reveals those old mosaic decorations, frescoes, vaults and domes of the Byzantine period. The two small domes of the inner narthex have portraits of Jesus, Mary and popular Christian figures.
Kariye museum is open from 9am to 7pm, all days of the week. Admission tickets cost 15 TL. You can buy the tickets at the entrance or purchase the Istanbul Museum Pass online to access Kariye museum as well as Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia. The Eastern Roman building is easily accessible through bus as well as taxi.
