About Hamburg Hauptbahnhof
Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is the central station of Hamburg in Germany. The Hamburg railway station boasts a footfall of around 450,000 daily, making it the busiest railway station in Germany and the second-busiest in Europe.
Hamburg station is not a terminus; instead, it is a through station. It connects major cities and countries of Europe from south to north. Trains from Switzerland, Cologne, Berlin, and others enter the station from the south. Trains to Copenhagen and Hamburg Altona leave the station towards the north.
The station showcases a European architectural finesse through the magnificent trainshed made of glass and iron. The 70 meters wide roof construction design in the platform hall was modeled on the Galerie des machines at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1889. The station was opened in 1906 to replace several smaller terminuses at the time.
Hamburg Hauptbahnhof provides several travel-friendly amenities to passengers. Located in the city center of Hamburg, the railway station is easily accessible. The city center is a short walk from the station and also can be accessed by public transportation. The western exit of the station leads to the city center. The eastern exit leads you to the taxi rank, car hire desks, ticket desks, and more. You can also find reasonable hotels in front of the exit.
Additionally, there are several ATMs around the station. Passengers can also easily avail luggage lockers in the Hamburg central station. There are two rooms full of various sizes of lockers in the east hall of the station right next to the ticket office. The WiFi facility in the station is free for the first 30 minutes.
Interestingly, the Hamburg railway station has a 2-tier shopping mall known as the Wandelhalle near the north end of the trainshed. It runs between the east and west exits over the railway tracks. The Wandelhalle has several fast food joints, restaurants, gift shops, bookstores, and a supermarket named Edeka.
Some popular food joints in the food court are KFC, Subway, McDonald’s, and Starbucks. Passengers can also opt for a sit-down meal at a reasonable price at the Schweinske between train journeys. However, if you want to enjoy a peaceful meal at a quieter place, away from the bustle of the station, there are a number of restaurants within a short walking distance from the station. Apart from this, the Edeka supermarket is the best place to shop for necessities during your journey. The supermarket is open seven days a week from 7 AM to 11 PM.
You can also check out the DB First Class Lounge if you are a 1st class ticket holder of DB trains. The lounge offers complimentary tea, coffee, beer, and snacks to the passenger with free WiFi. However, only long-distance Flexpreis tickets are allowed to access the First Class Lounge.
Passengers can buy tickets physically at the ticket counter at the railway station. The ticket office is situated in the east hall. Visit the HVV customer service center or buy from the ticket machines. However, passengers can also search online for tickets.
Hamburg Hauptbahnhof connects several cities. The most significant route is the Berlin-Hamburg railway route that connects Hamburg to Germany’s capital city. The other routes connect Hamburg to Hanover, Bremen and Ruhr, Lubeck, Altona, and Kiel.
