About El Retiro Park
Located in the heart of Madrid, the capital city of Spain, El Retiro Park, originally belonged to the Spanish royals of the 19th century, before opening doors to the public in 1869, and is now a large civic park unfolding over 125 hectares, and is home to over 15,000 trees. The park is close by the famous Prado Museum, and is an important landmark in the city of Madrid.

The park officially named as, Parque Del Buen Retiro is a popular tourist attraction for rowboats, and is right next to the street of Alphonso XII. Visitors can explore some of the finest examples of Spanish medieval architectural monuments, built during the various phases of the park enlargement. The park enjoyed immense royalty during the reign of King Philip IV, King Charles II, and Queen Isabella II, and is now popularly tagged as the “green lung of the city”.

Designed by architect Juan Bautista de Toledo, the park is full of sculptures, fountains, galleries, lake, French style garden, monumental pieces, and exotic species of green trees. Visitors throng the park for its green spaces, events, and sporting activities, all round the year. The park built in Baroque style around the 16th century, has an entrance with 11 monumental gates.

Popular for being one of the greenest spaces of Madrid City, the notable attractions at the park include the Equestrian statues, the Retiro pond, the Rose garden, the fountain of the fallen angel, and the Museum of Cason Del Buen Retiro. Other attractions are the statues of kings from the royal palace, the Crystal Palace, the Forest of Remembrance, Andalusian inspired garden, and the Galapagos Fountain.

The park organizes free concerts from May-Sept, and conducts annual book fair, firework shows, sporting events, street performances, and puppet shows. Rollerblade skating is an important sporting activity at the park, along with yoga, jogging, and strolling. Nearby places are the park are Puerta de Alcalá, Prado Museum, Naval Museum, Madrid, Plaza de Cibeles, and Neptune Fountain.

The park is open all year round from 6:00am- 12:00am during April to October and, from 6:00am-10:00pm during October to March. Admission is free to all and, the nearest airport, Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport is 78km from the park, and the nearest metros are at Paseo De Las Delicias, Vista Del Parque, and are a 7-minute walk from the park.
