About Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh Castle is an iconic fortress located in Edinburgh, Scotland. Built on a 700 million year old extinct volcano called Castle Rock, the place remained the Scottish Royal residence until 16th century. It later housed many prisoners of war, including 21 pirates of the Caribbean. More than 1,000 prisoners had been locked up here. It was also used as a prison during World War I. A popular tourist attraction in Scotland, nobody for sure knows when the castle was originally built. Archaeologists have however speculated that the castle might have been established in the 2nd century AD.
Key areas within the Edinburgh Castle include Esplanade, St. Margaret’s Chapel, Gatehouse, Portcullis Gate & Argyle Tower, Argyle Battery, Cartsheds, Butts Battery, Scottish National War Museum, Governors House, New Barracks, Military Prison, Royal Scots Museum, Food’s Gate, Reservoirs, Crown Square, Royal Palace, Great Hall, and Scottish National War Memorial. The St. Margaret’s Chapel, constructed in the early 12th century, is said to be the oldest building in all of Scotland.
