About Cradle of Humankind
Cradle of Humankind is a significant palaeo-anthropological site in Western Gauteng, South Africa. It is said to be one of the eight World Heritage Sites in South Africa. About 50kms from Johannesburg, visitors to the site will find remains of hominids from about 2 to 3.3 million years ago. Since 1936, thousands of fossils have been discovered here that show human evolution. The Sterkfontein caves is among the other popular caves. Others include Kromdraai, Swartkrans cave, Coopers B, Wonder Cave, Drimolen, Gladysvale, Gondolin, Plover’s Lake, Haasgat, Bolt’s Farm and Minnaar’s. Spread across 47,000 hectares, the heritage site also has preserves of rock art and archaeological treasures. If you are looking for adventure, you have daily balloon flights, cable cars and zip lines offering great views of the surrounding.
Before the caves sprang up, researches say the spot was filled with coral reefs, later they transformed into limestone. Visitors can also enter the Cradle Nature Reserve for being lost in the midst of beautiful fauna and flora. More than 200 different bird species have been spotted here. Maropeng is the official visitor centre of the Cradle of Humankind and the Sterkfontein Caves. For dining, you have Tumulus restaurant and Market Place restaurant. If you are looking for a place to stay, then the Maropeng Hotel is the perfect place to wind down.
The Sterkfontein Caves is open from 9am to 5pm. Tickets for adult and children are required for entry. They can be purchased at entry or even online on the official website. Senior citizens and students enjoy discounts. Private tours into the caves as well can be booked before visit.
