Tourists to New York definitely will have the Chrysler Building as a must- see on their bucket list of famous sights to take in. A common sight in Hollywood movies shot in New York, this iconic and unmistakable building on the Manhattan skyline is 1046 feet tall and is a classic example of the Art Deco style of architecture. For about 11 months it was the tallest building in the world before it was dethroned by the Empire State Building in 1931. The Chrysler Building, however, still holds the record as the tallest brick building in the world.
Designed by Architect William Van Alen, the Chrysler Building, with its high spire and a needle like tower and the terraced crown with arches radiating skyward, is very indicative of the art deco movement. The building is used for offices and hence not available for public viewing. The lobby, however, is open to visitors. The exteriors are drool worthy too.
The triangular lobby is akin to a museum and has a spectacular mural on the ceiling titled Transport and Human Endeavor, by artist Edward Trumbull. The walls are fashioned from granite and stone, sourced from Africa and Europe. The lighting is kaleidoscopic with marble and onyx used in the to reflect the light shafts. It also houses the world’s first digital clock. Even the doors of 30 plus elevators have custom designed intricately inlaid doors, unique to the art deco style.
Entrance to the Building for visitors is restricted to the lobby, for which there is no entrance fee. The Chrysler Building stands on 405 Lexington Avenue in midtown Manhattan next to the Grand Central Terminal. It is well connected by subway from most parts of New York. The lobby is open to visitors between 8.00am and 6.00 pm Monday through Friday.
What better way to admire the exterior grandeur of the Chrysler Building than to grab a bite at one of the numerous cafes and food joints near the Grand Central Terminal and gaze at the art deco skyscraper to your heart’s delight.
Since the Chrysler Building is located in midtown Manhattan, the heart of the New York tourist sight -seeing hub, visitors could also fit in many other New York attractions such as the Empire State Building, Times Square, Rockefeller Centre, The UN Building and Waldorf Astoria.
