About Chinatown, Singapore
chinatown-singaporeChinatown is a popular landmark and ethnic enclave in Singapore with plenty of traditional Chinese shops, restaurants and food carts. Also locally popular as Niu Che Shui and Kreta Ayer, Chinatown is comprised of five districts – Telok Ayer, Bukit Pasoh, Tanjong Pagar, Kreta Ayer and Ann Siang Hill. The Telok Ayer’s origin dates back to the 1820’s

At Chinatown Singapore you will also be surprised to find people of other ethnicities living alongside the Chinese in harmony. There is the Jamae Mosque and Sri Mariamman Temple that are open to tourists. There is also the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum. Chinatown is lit up with lights during the Chinese New Year, Dumpling Festival, Hungry Ghost Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and Dong Zhi. If you visit during the Chinese New Year, you will be surprised by the massive crowd that throng the stores.

There are a number of shopping malls where you can buy traditional Chinese handicrafts, antiques, medicines and apparel. Some malls you should try include People’s Park, Chinatown Point, Pearl’s Centre and OG People’s Park. As for transportation, the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) offers easy connections on the North East and Downtown Lines. If you are taking bus, you have stops at South Bridge Road, Maxwell Road, Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road.
