About Punjab National Bank
Punjab National Bank is the second largest state owned commercial bank in India with about 5000 branches across 764 cities. It was registered on May 19, 1894 under the Indian Companies Act and is currently the third largest bank in India. Punjab National Bank Ltd was the result of the efforts of far-sighted visionaries and patriots, among whom were persons like Lala Lajpat Rai, Mr. E C Jessawala, Babu Kali Prasono Roy, Lala Harkishan Lal and Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia. The bank began with an idea that Indians should have a national bank of their own. Since its beginning in 1895, PNB has achieved significant growth in business which at the end of March 2010 amounted to Rs 435931 crore. The bank has presence in 9 countries, with 2 branches at Hong Kong, 1 each at Kabul and Dubai; representative offices at Almaty, Dubai, Shanghai and Oslo.
Further, the bank supports various societies, charitable institutions and NGO /organisations working for the benefit of downtrodden, weaker sections of society, orphans, underprivileged, handicapped, mentally retarded children, women in shelter homes, etc. PNB in the past has acquired several banks including New Bank of India, Hindustan Commercial Bank and Universal Bank of India.
