About Department of Home Affairs
The Department of Home Affairs is a department of the South African government and is responsible for visa and immigration, security and others. It is responsible for administering admissions into the country and determining the permanent residency of foreign nationals. The various visa types it issues include visitors visa, relatives visa, medical treatment visa, business visa, exchange visa, study visa, and corporate visa. It also provides temporary and permanent residence permits. Those coming on visit, tourism or business can stay for up to 90 days or less. The requirements differ from country to country.

Citizens of some countries are not required to hold a visa for entry. The list includes Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, Venezuela, Zambia and Zimbabwe. When applying visa, you can contact the local mission/consulate or even apply online. Documents required include a passport, a completed BI-84 form, photographs, payment of fee, proof of financial means, travel documents and documentation confirming purpose of visit.

The complete list of documents, custom requirements and prohibited goods are available on the website. Applications for temporary residence visa can be made online. Applying for Permanent Residency (Immigration) is more tedious and requires lengthy procedures. South Africa has a number of ports of entry to enter into or depart. The list includes Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. As for ports at South Africa harbors, you will find in Cape Town, Durban, East London, Mossel Bay, Port Elizabeth, Port Ngqura, Richards Bay and Saldanha Bay. For more information or queries on application, visa status, fees, online submission, or others, reach the Dept of Home Affairs support.
