Founded by brothers Suneet and Raja Tuli in Montreal in 2001, Datawind today has offices in Amritsar, New Delhi, Dallas, Montreal and Mississauga. Datawind says its mission is to “bring the internet, which has the ability to create tremendous social and economic benefits, to billions of unconnected people”. Two products featured on the Datawind website include Pocker Surfer smartphone and UbiSlate tablet. The smartphone starts with as low as Rs 2,000, with features such as 3.5 inch touch screen, Android OS, Cortex A7 processor, up to 32GB microSD card, among others. As for the UbiSlate tablet, it starts with a price of Rs 4,000. The highest is the UbiSlate 3G10 which is available for Rs 10,000 and comes with all power packed features.
Among the products the company sells, Aakash tablet has been one that brought fame to Datawind. The touch-screen tablet was co-developed with Datawind and Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthan as part of India’s e-learning initiative to connect 25,000 colleges and 400 universities.
