About Agra Fort
Agra Fort is a popular tourist attraction in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. A 16th century red sandstone fortress, Agra Fort was home to Mughal rulers Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb. Founded in 1565, Agra Fort rises over 20 meters and 2.5 km in circumference. Located on the bank of Yamuna River, Agra Fort has been designated the UNESCO World Heritage status.
Within the fort, you can find semi-palaces, Harem quarters, Halls of Public and Private Audience, among others. Other highlights at the fort include the Amar Singh Gate, Jahangiri Mahal, Hauz-i-Jahangir, Jodha Bai’s Palace, Anguri Bagh, Golden Pavilions, Khas Mahal, Mussaman Burj, Sheesh Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas and Diwan-i-Am
Apparently, Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb for eight years in the octagonal tower, known as ‘Mussaman Burj. And he was placed here so he could see the Taj Mahal in clear view. Modeled after the Rajput fort, Agra Fort is open from 6am to 6pm. A ticket is needed for entrance.
